Global Detergents Market - Segmented by Type, Product, Application, and Region - Growth, Trends, and Forecast (2018 - 2023)

The global detergents market is expected grow at a significant rate during the forecast period of 2018—2023, driven by the increased availability of shale gas reserves for the production of synthetic detergents. Detergents are surfactants or a mixture of surfactants, which exhibit high-quality cleansing properties in diluted solutions. Alkyl benzenesulfonates and its compounds are the main ingredients of the detergent.

Increased Availability of Shale Gas Reserves

According to the United States Energy Information Administration, the global natural gas production was 352 billion ft3/day in 2017 and is forecasted to reach around 550 billion ft3/day by 2040. The largest component of this growth is due to the increase of natural gas production from shale oil reserves, ranging from 46 billion ft3/day in 2017 to about 170 billion ft3/day in 2040, accounting for over 30% of the world’s natural gas production by the end of the forecast period. Currently, only four countries, namely, the United States, Canada, China, and Argentina account for commercial shale gas production. Technological improvements during the forecast period are expected to boost the development of shale resources in other countries as well, predominantly in Mexico and Algeria.

Cationic Detergents to Dominate the Market

Cationic detergents are usually quaternary ammonium salts and often have bactericidal properties. These agents have strong mineral absorption, particularly silicates, and therefore make a strong bond between the asphalt and the aggregate. Furthermore, cationic detergents are also used in DNA purification and as surfactants in drug/vaccine delivery systems. They also tend to possess germicidal properties, so are often used in cleaning and disinfecting applications. Examples of cationic detergents are CTAB (hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide) and TTAB (Trimethyltetradecylammonium bromide). North America is currently the leading consumer of cationic detergents. Consumers in North America tend to prefer environmental friendly alternatives to synthetic detergents, owing to increasing awareness about environmental benefits associated with bio-detergents.

China Dominating the Market

China is currently the fastest growing detergent market in the world, primarily driven by rising hygiene awareness. Furthermore, rapid industrial expansion in the country is leading to the rapid development of synthetic detergents, including laundry detergents and household cleaning detergents.

Major players include BASF SE, DowDuPont, Procter & Gamble Co., and Unilever Group, amongst others.
