Worldwide Smartwatch Market Shares, 2016: Despite 7.9% Year-Over-Year Decline, Apple Still in Control

This IDC study examines the market shares of vendors in the worldwide smartwatch market in 2016."Apple finished 2016 in the same way that it finished 2015: as the undisputed leader in the worldwide smartwatch market," points out Ramon T. Llamas, research manager with IDC's Wearables program. "Yet even for its brand strength and customer loyalty, its year-over-year decrease and its small volumes compared with its other device categories underscore that it is still very much a work in progress. To this end, constant refinement of the Watch and its services are warranted.""Beyond Apple, the smartwatch market experienced its fair share of growing pains in 2016," adds Llamas. "It was a combination of companies leaving, entering, or being acquired, but it also lays down the foundation of how the market will take shape in 2017 and beyond: with refined experiences, smartwatches aimed at specific niche markets, and lower pricing that puts smartwatches within reach of more customers.
