Why Tethered VR HMD Sales Will Skew Toward PCs Long Term, Not Game Consoles

This IDC study uses the installed base (IB) trajectories of PCs and game consoles over the next several years to estimate the general sales/shipment trend for tethered virtual reality head-mounted displays (VR HMDs). An analysis of IB data suggests that PC use cases will dominate the tethered VR HMD landscape by 2019."Sony's PlayStation VR may sell reasonably well this holiday season and in 2017," says Lewis Ward, director of Gaming Research at IDC. "Over time, however, the installed base of PCs that are capable of running much multimedia VR apps will expand faster than the PS4's installed base, precipitating a strong skew in sales toward devices like the Oculus Rift and HTC's Vive."
