IDC PeerScape: Leading in 3D — Practices for Implementing a Collaborative Program Management Office

This IDC study introduces three practices that help senior technology executives and company officers, among them the CIO, implement a cross-functional program management office with a flexible bench of skilled, project-driven collaborators. This activity is one of the integration initiatives that must be undertaken to digitalize a traditional business, and it is stipulated in the Leading in 3D (L3D) research practice (see Leading in 3D: Becoming A Digital Business, IDC #US41012216, February 2016).The L3D leadership model identifies three main dimensions, or phases, in the pursuit of digital transformation. The first phase — innovate — pertains to developing the corporate elements of innovation. The second phase — integrate — is about infusing innovation elements across the organization. Finally, the third phase — incorporate — depicts how infrastructure, services, user experience, and data can be applied to sustain this transformation. Integration initiatives, such as the one featured here, describe how a company's organization, methods, tools, and architecture can be used to integrate new ways of doing business. By learning how best to formulate product road maps, include market intelligence, and manage knowledge, enterprise leaders will be able to take a constructive step towards digital transformation.
