Worldwide Home Video Game Console and Microconsole Forecast, 2016–2020: A Tale of Two Markets

This IDC study forecasts home video game console hardware and software and related services through 2020. North America is broken out from Western Europe, Asia/Pacific, and the combined rest of the world (ROW) region. Seventh- and eighth-generation consoles are contrasted in aggregate, and packaged game discs are considered separately from digital game distribution systems and revenue streams. Digital-only microconsoles, which are beginning to impact HDTV gaming at the margins, are also considered, but in less detail than the packaged game playing home consoles from Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony, that dominate the HDTV gaming landscape."Growth in digital home console gaming in 2016 has been impressive. It certainly appears that gamers have embraced digital full game purchases on eighth-generation platforms in addition to free-to-play content.
