GDC 2016 Postmortem: Beyond the VR Hype

This IDC study examines three important subthemes coming out of GDC 2016 that were perhaps lost in the shadows of virtual reality's red carpet stroll. These key industry developments are falling barriers to entry into game development from a technical angle, the increasing sophistication of mobile-oriented development tools and engines, and the growth of eSports and associated first wave attempts to productize what's previously existed only in the proprietary/custom domain."There's an opportunity emerging in the area of cloud-based systems that support online multiplayer titles and eSports titles in particular," says Lewis Ward, IDC's gaming research director. "It appears that, similar to what's happened in the development environment and game engine market segments, online multiplayer and eSports technologies will become off-the-shelf assets that can be rented by even fairly small studios at an affordable price within a few years, and this could be prove to be a lucrative offering for well-positioned vendors."
