This IDC study examines the change in priorities for boards of directors as market landscapes evolve with the advent of digital technologies and new business models fueled by venture capital–driven technology start-ups that are ambitious to disrupt. With increasing attention of the boards on technology, CIOs need to not only be aware of this shift in board priority but, more importantly, be adequately prepared to engage with their board in an effective manner. This study also reviews the compelling factors for boards' shift in priorities as well as examines the stages that boards go through. Last, it provides essential guidance to CIOs on how best to work with their boards for each stage of the board engagement and describes what types of information the boards of directors are looking for. This IDC study focuses on digital transformation, leadership transformation, and IT strategy and governance.
