The clothing and footwear retail segment registered positive performance in 2011 and remained on the same upward path in Jan-Sep 2012. The textile, clothing and footwear retail sales recorded annual growth every month over the period Jan-Sep 2012, except for May -- when they dropped by 2.5% y/y, according to official statistics. However, the performance of the market in the second half of the year is particularly important, as sales in H2 generate some 60% of the full-year total.

The Polish clothing and footwear market has been resilient to the global crisis so far, yet it did not remain completely unaffected by the economic slowdown and shrinking purchase power. The smaller players in particular faced with the negative effects of changing consumer behavior and buying pattern. Most of the large players, on the other hand, managed to report improving results y/y in Jan-Sep 2012 and plan further expansion of the chains. Furthermore, several new entries announced this year show that Poland continues to be attractive for international players not yet present on the market.

The foreign trade with clothing and footwear also increased on annual basis both in volume and value terms in 2011, according to the latest official statistics. The main export destinations for clothing were Germany and Netherlands, while footwear exports went mostly to Russia, Germany and Ukraine. As regards imports, China remained the major source for clothing and footwear products.

The manufacturing of clothing and footwear, on the other hand, did not parallel the positive dynamics of the domestic and foreign trade in Jan-Oct 2012. The clothing production remained on the same downward tendency as in the past years. In Jan-Oct 2012 output of all segments except women and men jackets dropped y/y. Footwear production diminished by 9.8% y/y over the period, turning in the negative area after the 5.6% y/y growth in 2011.
