Heavy Industry is comprised of Energy and Resources, Manufacturing and Construction, Materials and Chemicals and Transportation and Shipping industries.
Energy and Resources. This industry is broad, encompassing fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas, renewable and alternative sources, electricity demand and supply, waste management, minerals, mining, utilities and other impacted market sectors.
Manufacturing and Construction. The Manufacturing sector covers work performed in mechanical, physical, or chemical transformation of materials, substances, or components into new products. The assembling of component parts of manufactured products also falls under Manufacturing unless the activity is appropriately classified in Construction.
The Construction sector primarily covers work performed in the construction of buildings or engineering projects (e.g., highways and utility systems). Companies that perform work in the preparation of sites for new construction and those involved subdividing land for sale as building sites also are included in Construction.
Materials and Chemicals. Materials and Chemicals is an interdisciplinary heavy industry sector. Materials industry applies the properties of matter to various areas of science and engineering. It incorporates elements of applied physics and chemistry. Significant attention in the Materials field is currently focused on nanoscience and nanotechnology. Chemicals are a broad chemical category including polymers, bulk petrochemicals and intermediates, other derivatives and basic industrials, and more.
Transportation and Shipping. The Transportation & Shipping industry includes the Automotive, Aviation, Aerospace, Logistics, Maritime, Mass Transit and Railroad markets. Intermodality among all these systems is critical to transportation and shipping industry success. The world T&S industry is cast as part of the dynamic energy conservation and clean technology revolution. Intelligent, smart grid connecting transport systems that reduce energy consumption by aircraft, by rail, mass transit and automobiles are a growing sector of the industry. High speed rail systems are being built in several countries challenged by mobile workforces. Highways are being widened and built new to accommodate the trucking sector to major airports, maritime provinces and resources. Electric cars are hitting the highways in steadily increasing numbers.
