The Ministry of Natural Resources, Energy and Mines of the Republic of Malawi (MoNREM) is planning to undertake the construction of a hydroelectric power plant project in Rumphi, Malawi.

The project involves the construction of a hydroelectric power plant to generate 200MW power.

It will include the construction of a dam, a powerhouse, a substation and service roads; the installation of transformers and four 50MW class Francis turbine generators; the laying of transmission lines.

In June 2013, MoNREM presented the development proposals at Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) international center.

The World Bank is providing funds to conduct the feasibility study.

In December 2014, pre-feasibility studies completed. Artelia Group has been appointed as study consultant for the project.

Feasibility studies for designs and tender documents are at advanced stage.

Scope

The project involves the construction of a hydroelectric power plant to generate 200MW power in Rumphi, Malawi.
