Apheresis Market Growth, Analysis - Segmented by Product (Devices and Disposables), Procedure, Application and Geography - Trends, and Forecast (2018 - 2023)

The apheresis market was valued at USD 1,788 million in 2017, is expected to register a CAGR of about 10.89% during the forecast period, 2018-2023. Apheresis is a medical technique where the blood of an individual, be a donor or a patient, is passed through an apparatus that segregates out a particular constituent and returns the rest to the blood circulation. This is an extracorporeal therapy. The market estimates are based on the revenue generated from the sales of various devices and disposables for apheresis.

Increasing Global Disease Burden Drives the Apheresis Market

Apheresis has recently witnessed a great demand due to an increased number of patients suffering from various ailments related to blood, kidney, metabolic diseases, and neurological disorders. It is also found in patients with autoimmune diseases. Cancers, such as leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are the types of cancer that can affect the bone marrow, the blood cells, the lymph nodes, and other parts of the lymphatic system. It has been observed that apheresis technology has been used in order to reduce the number of white cells until they can be controlled by other medications. According to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), approximately for every three minutes, one person in the United States is diagnosed with blood cancer. An estimated combined total of 174,250 people in the United States are expected to be diagnosed with leukaemia, lymphoma, or myeloma in 2018. According to the Cancer Research UK, it is estimated that the incidence rates for leukaemia are projected to rise by about 5% in the United Kingdom between 2014 and 2035, to 19 cases per 100,000 people by 2035. Along with these main disease conditions, the technology has also been widely used for the treatment of conditions, such as myasthenia gravis, systemic lupus disease, severe rheumatoid arthritis, and in cases of selected organ transplantation with a high risk of antibody-mediated rejection of the transplant. Use of apheresis in clinically ill patients is increasing day by day. It has been widely used as a primary therapy or as an adjunct to other therapies for various diseases, such as thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, haemolytic uremic syndrome, drug toxicities, autoimmune disease, sepsis, and fulminant hepatic failure. With the steady increase in the number of patients suffering from these diseases, ailments, and the technical ease of using these devices in the treatment of these diseases, requiring a minimal hospital stay, the global apheresis market is poised to grow during the forecast period.

High Capital Investment and Cost Associated With Apheresis Procedures Acts as a Major Barrier for the Apheresis Market

The cost of providing the apheresis therapy is a matter of almost universal concern. Estimates of the costs of individual apheresis treatments are very much available but vary widely. For instance, in the United States, the cost of an apheresis procedure is approximately USD 2500 per treatment, which is very high. An investment of USD 19,000 to USD 32,000 for a blood cell separator is the initial cost for setting up the machine and disposable sets produced by manufacturers will vary between USD 40 and USD 90 per treatment. Replacement fluids (at an average volume of 2.8 litres), such as albumin or fresh frozen plasma, make up the remainder of the costs, running USD 125 to USD 600 per treatment. Also, apheresis was routinely reimbursed by some third parties when prescribed by a physician. However, concerned about costs and estimates of expansion of use over the next five years, third-party payers are now attempting to tailor their policies according to the principle of appropriate use i.e., to pay for apheresis where and when it is a proven and efficient therapeutic method. Also, there are various studies on the cost of mobilization and apheresis of peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) that demonstrate the process is costly and that the cost increases with the increase of the number of mobilization attempts. In India, the apheresis machine costs Rs.17.5 lakh and there is an apheresis kit which is required for separating components costing INR 10,000, which is very costly for low-income individuals to afford. Thus, high capital investment and cost associated with this procedure is acting as a major restraint for the growth of the market.

Market Segmentation Insights for the Apheresis Market

By product, is further segmented into devices and disposables. The disposables have the largest share in the market which is 56% in 2017. Factors which are augmenting the growth of the disposables in the market are bulk purchases which is one of the important factors. Also, manufacturers establish long-term purchase contracts with the end users in order to achieve bulk purchase benefits and strengthen their customer relationships. Disposables have the highest CAGR in the apheresis market.

By procedure, the market is segmented into Leukapheresis, Plasmapheresis, Plateletpheresis, Erythrocytapheresis and others. Plasmapheresis has the largest share in the market as it is done for three basic purposes, including donation, plasma exchange, and autologous removal of patient blood plasma. Also, plasmapheresis can treat HIV related neuropathy, recurrent focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis in the transplanted kidney, Goodpasture’s syndrome, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy. However, Plateletpheresis is rapidly growing with the highest CAGR in the market.

By technology, segment is further segmented into centrifugation and membrane separation. Centrifugation has the highest share in the technology segment as they are commonly used for blood banking given that they are capable of selective cell removal (cytapheresis) in addition to plasmapheresis. During centrifugation, blood cells are separated by specific gravity based on the different densities of the blood components. Also, due to technological advancement of the centrifugation devices. For instance, Spectra Optia device, a centrifugation system device by Caridian BCT Inc. was also recently adopted in the United States and Europe.

Insights in the application segment in which neurological disorders has the largest share in the market which is about 31.3% as most neurological disease treatments with beneficial use of therapeutic apheresis (TA) are mediated by a humoral immune response, and these beneficial effects probably occur through the removal of pathogenic autoantibodies and associated inflammatory mediators. Hematological Disorders is growing with highest CAGR in the future forecast.

North America Expected to Have Largest Market Share in Apheresis Market

North America is expected to have the largest market share owing to the highly sophisticated healthcare infrastructure and high healthcare expenditure. In addition, a high patient awareness, the demand for plasma-derived medicines, and the rise in the disposable income make this region dominant in the market. Asia-Pacific is also expected to grow at a high rate during the forecast period due to a considerably well-established apheresis market in Japan, moreover, the emerging economies, such as India and China, have large patients pool, geriatric population, and rising healthcare expenditure.
