They are made from a variety of plastic resins, such as different grades of polyethylene (PE), ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH). They are used as mulch and to cover silage bales. They are also used in greenhouses for controlling the temperature and moisture of soil, eliminating weeds, reducing the use of herbicides, storing and growing crops in greenhouses, and preventing soil erosion. However, owing to disposal and pollution hazards, they are being replaced by non-biodegradable alternatives. Commenting on the report, an analyst from Technavio’s team said: “Plasticulture refers to the usage of plastic resins across a variety of agricultural applications from soil culturing films, irrigation tapes, and silage bags, but primarily refers to greenhouse coverings and plastic films for mulching soil. The popularity of various grades of PE, especially LLDPE and LDPE, is high in this type of farming because they are cheap, flexible, and come in a variety of dimensions meant for specific applications. Their advantages can be extended to UV stabilization, moisture loss reduction, and the prevention of weed growth by using additives. After first being used on an experimental basis in 1948, it is now widely used by crop cultivators in China and Japan. The plasticulture concept also involves recycling used plastics for manufacturing.”
According to the report, one of the major drivers fueling the growing adoption of films is the need for crop growers to increase their overall output yield, sidetracking inefficiencies in the process. This has become important, as arable land suitable for cultivation is becoming scarce. Also, construction problems with canals that source water for irrigation are affecting farmers. The use of mulch films has resulted in an increase in yield of cash and grain crops. Individual crops such as maize, wheat, and potatoes have had an increase in yield of more than 25% each with the usage of mulching films. This increase is much sought after and is caused because of the soil conditioning and water retention properties of these films, along with the protection of crops from radiation and cold.
Further, the report states that rising costs of raw materials have led to cost constraints and reduced profit margins for vendors, especially micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).
