Geothermal Electricity Plant Operation
As a renewable energy source, geothermal development has lagged behind wind, solar and hydroelectric power. Even though geothermal exhibits a higher availability rate, the viability of this energy being produced on a commercial scale is limited by geography, as deposits of high-temperature subsurface water are required to produce geothermal electricity. Therefore, over the five years to 2019, revenue for the Geothermal Electricity Plant Operation industry has decreased modestly. The industry has struggled somewhat since 2014. Decreased federal funding for renewable energy, coupled with insufficient transmission line capabilities and low natural gas prices, reduced new capacity additions after 2014. As a result, industry revenue fell every year in the first half of the period. In 2018, multiple generators that were approved for construction earlier in the period become operational. Consequently, revenue increased in 2018. However, the low price of natural gas inhibited the development of more geothermal projects in 2019. Over the five years to 2024, the industry is poised to experience strong growth. As RPS deadlines approach, state utilities will increasingly demand higher quantities of renewable energy, stimulating demand for geothermal power producers. Moreover, ample untapped geothermal resources in the United States will enable industry expansion. As a result, total geothermal energy output is projected to increase strongly over the five years to 2024.
Establishments in this industry primarily operate geothermal electricity (geoelectric) plants. These facilities use heat from the earth to produce electric energy. The electric energy produced in these plants is provided to electric power transmission or distribution systems.
