Market Overview
The Global Cervical Cancer Treatment Market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.3% during the forecasting period (2020-2027).
Cervix is the lower part of the uterus that connects to vagina. Cervical cancer develops in the cells of the cervix. Strains of Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted infection, is responsible for 90% of cervical cancers. There are more than 100 strains of HPV, out of which 13 are high-risk or cancerous. Other factors include, oral contraceptives, multiple sexual partners, smoking, and HIV infection. In cervical cancer healthy cells mutate leading to uncontrolled growth of cells. These cells form a tumor which invades the nearby tissues. The early symptom of cervical cancer is vaginal bleeding after sexual intercourse with excruciating pain, irregular or intermenstrual vaginal bleeding, back, leg or pelvic pain, fatigue, weight loss, loss of appetite, vaginal discomfort or odorous discharge and a single swollen leg. Cervical cancer is of three types Squamous cell carcinoma, Cervical Adenocarcinoma and Adenosquamous carcinoma. About 9 out of 10 cervical cancers are squamous cell carcinomas. These cancers develop from cells in the exocervix while cervical adenocarcinoma develops from the mucus-producing gland cells of the endocervix. The incidence of adenocarcinoma is rising predominantly in younger girls. Adenosquamous carcinomas are less common, cervical cancers that have features of both squamous cell carcinomas and adenocarcinomas. According to the WHO, in 2018, cervical cancer was the fourth most frequent cancer in women with an estimated 570,000 new cases representing 6.6% of all female cancers.
The stages of cervical cancer is the most important factor in choosing treatment, other factors includes the exact location of the cancer within the cervix, the type of cancer, age and overall health. Different types of treatments includes radiotherapy, chemotherapy, cone biopsy, surgery and use of biologics.
Market Drivers
The market is driven by increased prevalence of cervical cancer, proactive government initiatives, awareness among people, new advancements in targeted therapies and strong pipeline of drugs.
Seven UN agencies under the United Nations Task Force on non-communicable diseases have established a Joint Programme to prevent and control cervical cancer to provide global leadership and technical assistance to support governments and the partners build and sustain programmes.
Easily available FDA-approved therapeutics such as ifosfamide (Ifex) and doxorubicin (Adriamycin) which are much cheaper contributed to growth of the global cervical cancer therapeutics market further help the market growth. Both of these drugs are on WHO’s List of Essential Medicines.
Market Restraints
High cost of treatment and adverse effects associated with cancer therapy, less number of targeted drugs with improved clinical profile at reduced costs and lack of awareness of cancer treatment in developing countries are going to restrain the market in the forecast period.
Pipeline:
Research and medical experts are developing advanced approaches to improve outcomes of cervical cancer treatment. The major area of research is combined therapy especially for recurrent or metastatic cervical cancers. Researchers are also exploring the prospects of adjuvant chemotherapy given to patients with stage III-IVA disease and positive lymph nodes and tumor volume, after computer controlled radiation therapy. Apart from combination therapies, researchers are also looking for cervical cancer treatment options involving targeting molecular pathways with innovative agents.
Immunotherapy, is one of the most promising alternative to prevent, treat, and cure cancer. Oncologists and medical experts are studying the effectiveness of immunotherapy, for cervical cancer treatment, including checkpoint inhibitors-for blocking cancer cells’ ability to harm the immune system and treatment vaccines for inducing a response against the cancer cells. For instance, Axalimogene filolisbac, already being studied in six clinical trials, is touted as the most unique immunotherapy for HPV-related cancers.
Institut Curie, launched a new clinical trial in 2018, by the name of NiCOL. this trial focuses on patients suffering from late-stage cervical cancers. NiCOL trial aims to assess the optimum dose of monoclonal antibodies, Nivolumab to be administered during the pelvic chemo-radiotherapy phase, then in treatment alone.
Iovance Biotherapeutics, Inc, is conducting five Phase 2 clinical trials to assess the efficacy and safety of autologous Tumor Infiltrating Lymphocytes (TIL) for treatment of patients with Cervical Cancer. The TIL therapy being studied in this trial is an investigational immunotherapy named LN-145. In a sponsored study by National Institutes of Health (NIH), TIL therapy showed thorough regression of metastatic cervical cancer.
Market Segmentation
The global cervical cancer treatment market can be segmented by type of cancer as Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Adenocarcinoma and Adenosquamous Carcinoma, by treatment as Surgery, Radiation Therapy, Chemotherapy, Targeted Therapy, Immunotherapy and Combined Therapy and by end user as Hospitals, Diagnostic centers, Cancer Palliative care clinics and Pharmacies.
Chemotherapy is expected to dominate the treatment segment for cervical cancer treatment market. Chemotherapy uses anti-cancer drugs that are injected into a vein or given by mouth. These drugs enter the bloodstream and can reach all areas of the body, making this treatment useful for killing cancer cells in most parts of the body. For some stages of cervical cancer, the preferred treatment is radiation and chemo given together called concurrent chemoradiation. The chemo helps the radiation work better. The chemo drugs most often used to treat advanced cervical cancer includes Cisplatin, Carboplatin, Paclitaxel (Taxol®), Topotecan and Gemcitabine (Gemzar®).
Chemotherapy has a lot of side effects as it influence the entire body. Researchers have been able to develop new drugs that specifically target the cancer effected cells. Bevacizumab (Avastin®) is the most common drug used to treat advanced cervical cancer. It is a monoclonal antibody (a man-made version of a specific immune system protein) that targets vascular endothelial growth factor. Avastin is one of the most common drug used to treat cervical cancer. Lesser side effects and newer research is expected to help the growth of Targeted Drug Therapy segment over the period of forecast.
Geographical Analysis
Geographically, the global cervical cancer treatment market is divided into North America, Europe, South America, Asia-Pacific and the Middle East and Africa.
North America was the dominant region in the global cervical cancer treatment market and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. This growth is attributed to growing number of patients, increasing market penetration of drugs, and easy accessibility to advanced treatments. According to American Cancer Society, nearly 13,240 new cases of invasive cervical cancer were diagnosed in US, by 2018 end and nearly 4,170 women died because of cervical cancer. In the United States, Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) sponsored National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP) that helps both uninsured and insured low-income women to get timely screening. After the implementation of Pap-Smear Test a reduction of nearly 60% cervical cancer deaths were observed.
According to WHO, nearly 75% of all cases of cervical cancer occurs in developing and underdeveloped regions, mostly in Asia and Africa, where healthcare facilities are limited and awareness about diagnosis and treatment is low. Awareness initiatives taken by governments to educate women about early diagnostic test and treatment has increased in developing nations
