Anesthesia Market Research Reports & Industry Analysis

Anesthesia is defined as a temporary state of unconsciousness, lack of pain, loss of memory and muscle relaxation. Most associate the word with being medically placed in an unconscious state for surgery. While the word anesthesia may be a relief to some who want to avoid the pain of surgery, the risks associated with medically induced unconsciousness can create fear in others. Statistics in 2014 show the death rate held steady at three per 10,000 procedures or surgeries involving anesthesia. Between the years of 2010 and 2013, the rate of complications decreased to 4.8% from 11.8%. The most common minor complications involving anesthesia were nausea and vomiting. An estimated 36% of the more than 3.2 million cases of anesthesia administered in that timeframe reported this issue. The most common major complication was medication error with nearly 12% of cases reporting this issue. Experts note that the risk of complications during anesthesia are heightened by the following factors: smoking, obstructive sleep apnea, high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, heart- or lung-related medical conditions, history of heavy alcohol use, drug allergies, or a history of adverse reactions to anesthesia. As the aging population grows and more individuals need medical care, the need for anesthesia is expected to increase, which means there will be greater need for anesthesia devices. Some common devices include continuous-flow anesthesia machines, monitors and touchscreen displays. Analysts forecast that the global anesthesia devices market is expected to grow 7.47% over the period 2013-2018.
