Europe Market Report for Spinal Vertebral Compression Fracture 2017 - MedCore

Europe Market Report for Spinal Vertebral Compression Fracture 2017 - MedCore

A vertebral compression fracture (VCF) occurs when the bone tissue of the vertebral body collapses in the spine. There are various causes of VCFs, but the most common is osteoporosis. Typically, the lumbar region of the spine is affected, resulting in the anterior section of the vertebral body collapsing. This can cause the spine to tilt forward. In multi-level cases, kyphosis (hunchback of the spine) can result from a VCF. In addition, VCFs can result from malignancy, infection or trauma to the spine.General Report Contents

VCFs are painful for the affected patient and symptoms can worsen over time as a result of the physical stresses of walking. Nerves near the VCF are susceptible to further pressure from the fracture and symptoms of numbness, tingling and weakness are often experienced. Furthermore, loss of urinary bladder control can occur when the fracture pushes on the spinal cord itself.

The majority of VCFs occur as a result of loss of bone density due to osteoporosis. Most VCFs heal on their own over time, but 50% of VCF patients exhibit more than one VCF per year. These patients typically qualify for one of two minimally invasive VCF treatment options: vertebroplasty or percutaneous vertebral augmentation (PVA). Both utilize the injection of bone cement to relieve VCF symptoms and prevent further fractures.
