Executive Summary

This Key Note Market Update examines the UK market for fresh fruit and vegetables at retail. In 2014 the market fell by 0.8% representing the first instance of annual decline in the 5-year review period analysed by this report. Yet this value decrease was not exhibited across both market sectors. The fruit sector exhibited modest value growth in 2014 whereas the vegetable sector exhibited a more substantial decline. As such while the latter continues to account for the majority of market value its share has decreased as the fruit sector has become more competitive in value terms.

However it is important to emphasise that this trend is attributable to inflated retail prices and is not indicative of volume sales. In fact vegetable sales by volume significantly exceed those of fruit but volatile prices have blurred this distinction in terms of sector value. The UK imports large quantities of vegetables but is even more dependent on fruit imports owing to the UK’s climate. As such prices in the fruit sector have inflated more rapidly since the onset of the financial crisis in 2008/2009 and are less dependent on the success of UK harvest. In the vegetables sector on the other hand many prices exhibited deflation compared with 2013 owing to the relative success of the harvest following a long hot summer.

Given the importance of price and increasingly health to UK consumers in this marketplace it is perhaps surprising that vegetable consumption did not exhibit a more substantial increase in 2014..
