The Polish telecom market inched up in 2011, as the moderate expansion of the internet and mobile segments managed to offset the poor performance of voice call services at fixed locations, official statistics show.

The data transfer market benefited of increasing demand and popularity in 2011.

Mobile internet services in particular have been gaining grounds and currently competes against fixed-line internet access. The number of users of 2G/3G modems increased in 2011 and 2G/3G became the most popular form of internet access. The penetration rate of mobile internet in Poland reached 8.3% in 2011, 0.2pps above EU average and ranking 9th among EU countries.

The consolidation in the telecom sector continued in 2011 and further activity is expected in 2012 as well. The most spectacular move on the mobile telephony segment last year was the purchase of Polkomtel by Spartan Capital Holdings for PLN 18.1bn (EUR 4.1bn).

The rebranding of PTC was another important event. The Era brand disappeared from the market starting with June 5 and was replaced by T-Mobile. We also note in the same context the acquisition of Polish cable operator Aster by the UPC, announced in 2010 and cleared by the antitrust authority in September 2011, as well as the takeover of mobile operator Telefonia Dialog by Netia, finalised in December 2011. Early this year Cyfrowy Polsat purchased 100% stake in the companies behind the online film service Ipla from Bithell Holdings. In September 2012, the antitrust watchdog approved the joint control of ITI Neovision (Platforma ā€˜n’) and Canal+ over their merged entity n/C+.
