Abstract

While Sprint and Clearwire begin to roll out WiMAX networks by metro and region, major US cities continue to pursue their own Wi-Fi network deployment plans independently. The degree to which competition from Sprint and Clearwire will affect the viability of these city Wi-Fi networks is still an open question. Meanwhile, WiMAX service providers are only just beginning to leverage the opportunity that cities represent as anchor tenants on their networks, as demonstrated by Clearwire’s activity in Grand Rapids, Mich.
