AbstractCancer remains the second-leading cause of death in the industrialized world, but the disease continues to be underserved by effective therapeutic agents. Further, many of the available agents act systemically and therefore have side effects that range from uncomfortable to life threatening. At the end of 2000, there were over 350 drugs in development for the treatment of various cancers, more than for any other disease category. Of these, more than 40 were in Phase III trials. This report discusses four primary categories of currently available cancer agents: cytotoxics, biologics (excluding vaccines), adjunct therapies and innovative therapies. Innovative therapies include such products as monoclonal antibodies, vaccines and gene therapy. Market forecasts and trends are provided for these categories. Extended discussion is provided on new technologies involved in the treatment of cancer, such as angiogenesis inhibitors, matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors, signal transduction inhibitors, antibodies to surface markers and growth factors, gene therapies and vaccines. The competitive environment is examined, with a special focus on how new products and technologies as well as acquisitions and mergers are likely to reshuffle the leading manufacturers in the cancer arena. Profiles are provided of current market leaders as well as companies with innovative products poised to enter the sector during the forecast period.
