Spending growth was buoyant in Q112, with PC sales making a strong recovery and strongdemand for tablets and smartphones. In 2012 consumer electronics spending is expected to be driven byan improving economy and salary increases for civil servants and others. In 2011,vendors reporteddouble-digit growth in spending on products such as flat-screen TV sets. In future, a record lowunemployment rate of 0.9% should provide support for continued consumer spending, but in our view themain driver will be product innovation such as LED and 3D TV sets, tablets and smartphones.Headline Expenditure ProjectionsComputer hardware sales: US$3.8bn in 2011 to US$4.2bn in 2012,+11% in US dollar terms. Key Trends & Developments BMI has included tablets in its Thai PC market forecast for the first time, as they are expected tobe a major growth driver for IT hardware in 2012, with potential growth of 400%. BMI'sforecast does not include the 800,000 tablets the government plans to distribute to schools. In2011 the government launched an initiative to distribute tablets to Grade One schoolchildren andthe ultimate aspiration is one tablet for every schoolchild. As sales of tablets grow, this willconstrain shipments of desktops, but notebook sales should continue to grow. With falling pricesand growing penetration of flat-screen TV sets, vendors will look to product innovation such as3D TV sets and smart TV sets to drive growth. However, the development of the smart TVsegment will depend on domestic infrastructure of broadband accessibility and speed. Smartphone sales are projected to increase to about 31% of the handset market in 2012, withtheir share passing 50% by 2016. Shipments in Q411 exceeded 1mn units and in future, stronggrowth in mobile data usage is expected by Thailand mobile operators, fuelling demand forsmartphones. In revenue terms, smartphone sales comprise around half the total handset marketin 2012. Get full details about this report >> |
