IDC research shows that SMB ownership of several different UC technologies is increasing: more than 38% of small businesses (defined as those with fewer than 100 employees) and nearly three-quarters of midsize firms (defined as those with 100-999 employees) currently use at least one type of UC technology such as advanced telephony calling and management; unified messaging; Web conferencing, audioconferencing, and videoconferencing; instant messaging; or presence management. For many, ownership of one or more of these technologies will represent an important first step toward weaving the separate pieces into a comprehensive solution. SMB interest in adding UC technologies is considerable, with more than 30% of small firms and more than 55% of midsize firms citing plans to buy UC components in the next 12 months.
