The forecasts show both households that have each of these technologies and penetration into total U.S. television households. Historical data dating back to 2005 for HDTV and DVR households is also provided. "Consumers continue to adopt advanced video devices and services," says Greg Ireland, research manager on IDC's Consumer Markets team. "During the forecast period, we expect to see HDTV penetration reach near-saturation levels and DVR penetration to approach two-thirds of all U.S. TV households. 3DTV is still at an early stage, with limited near-term demand; however, penetration of 3D-capable HDTVs is expected to grow even in advance of consumer demand for 3D programming as 3D functionality becomes an increasingly common feature of HDTVs."
