Noroviruses are a group of RNA viruses which are highly infectious and stable in the environment. Mostly transmitted person to person in outbreaks, noroviruses are the leading cause of epidemic nonbacterial gastroenteritis worldwide often affecting the elderly in long-term care facilities and hospitals. Although Noroviruses cause a mild illness of short duration, severe dehydration or electrolyte imbalance can be a contributing cause to death in vulnerable populations.
