Synopsis

Abstract

SMBs represent 99% of total enterprises and three-quarters of the total workforce in Western Europe. More than 53% of total IT spending in software, hardware, and IT services is driven by SMBs. The 100-499 employees size segment will have compound annual growth almost 1% higher than firms with more than 500 employees for the period 2005-2009. All these considerations are leading major IT vendors to adapt their go-to-market strategies to address this vast market segment.

This IDC assessment describes the SMB strategy approach of the top IT vendors, such as Cisco, Dell, HP, IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, and SAP, illustrating some examples of their activity and providing an indication of their market presence in the SMB space.

"An effective go-to-market approach must be a combination of strong IT competencies and solid understanding of the SMB space, which is characterized by limited IT staff, restrained budget, and preference for simple to use, simple to install products and services," said Laura Converso, senior research analyst with IDC's European Small and Medium Business service.
