US Market Report for Peripheral Intravenous Catheters - MedCore

Peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVCs) can be classified by catheter length. For any given gauge sizethere is a corresponding length or range of lengths that are classified as standard. If the length of acatheter exceeds the standard for a given gauge size, the PIVC is classified as long. Standard gaugelengthcombinations include: gauge size 24 with length .75, gauge size 22 with length 1, gauge size 20with length 1” or 1.25 (with 1.25 being most common) and gauge size 18 with length 1.25” or 1.5.Examples of long PIVCs include C. R. Bard's AccuCath®, which is available with length of 2.25 in gaugesizes 18, 20 and 22. Becton Dickinson’s Autoguard™, which is available with a length of 1.88” in gaugesizes 18 and 20. Several configurations of B. Braun’s Introcan Safety® PIVCs, are also classified as long, including the 1.75” catheter with gauge size 18, 20 and 22.Long PIVCs are most frequently utilized in obese patients and inserted using ultrasound guidance. In, long PIVCs represented a small share of total PIVC unit sales. The share of total PIVC unit salesrepresented by long PIVCs is expected to increase over the forecast period as utilization of ultrasoundguidance increases.
