Surgical lighting is an integral component of every operating room (OR). In the past, surgical lighting wasmanufactured by companies that did not offer full integration solutions for the OR. Surgical lighting wasincluded in integrated OR packages due to strategic relationships and mutual agreements between thesurgical lighting manufacturer and the integrated OR manufacturer. Many companies that manufacturesurgical lighting also manufacture surgical booms, another common component of an integrated OR. Thishas led to the entry of traditionally surgical lighting and boom manufacturers into the integrated ORmarket.
Surgical lighting is required to provide sufficient illumination during a surgical procedure. Lightingsystems are especially important in invasive open surgeries, where the surgeon has a direct line of sightwith the cavity. Continuous and bright illumination is necessary, even when the light is temporarilyblocked by a surgeon’s head or arm. In order to achieve this, surgical lights are often deployed in pairs, and are called surgical lighting systems.
