Intermittent catheters can be further segmented as coated, uncoated latex or uncoated latex-free, conventional closed-system, hydrophilic and antimicrobial closed-system trays; however, this report does not distinguish between the different types and will focus on the overall intermittent catheter market.

Intermittent catheters have historically accounted for the largest share of the total market and will continue to do so over the forecast period. A shift towards home-use catheters will help to continue driving this shift. The by-product of this shift will be a noticeable decline in Foley catheter market values. This will occur through declines in ASP and stagnant unit sales.

The urinary catheter market is segmented into intermittent, Foley and male external catheters. Urinary catheters are hollow plastic or rubber tubes that are inserted into the urethra for the collection of urine for patients with urinary dysfunction. Intermittent catheters are used for short-term catheterization and include conventional, closed system and antimicrobial catheters. Foley catheters are generally used as long-term catheters and are retained by a balloon at the tip which is inflated with water. Foley catheters include those that are sold alone or those sold as trays; the corresponding market includes further segmentation between conventional and antimicrobial Foley catheters. Male external catheters are devices that fit over the penis and connect to a drainage bag.
