Intravenous (IV) sets consist of a length of tubing used to administer a solution directly into a patient’s veins, commonly referred to as infusion therapy. Infusion therapy is used when oral therapy is not a viable option due to the danger that medications will be destroyed when passing through the digestive tract, or when patients have disorders that make swallowing difficult.
IV tubing sets are used to deliver antibiotics, pain medication or drugs related to cancer treatment, such as chemotherapy drugs. These tubes can be used with either an infusion pump or with simple gravity infusion. The IV sets market can be broken up into three main categories: primary IV sets, secondary IV sets and IV extension sets.
Primary IV sets include a wide range of products used for various applications. This report segments primary IV sets into large volume pump dedicated primary IV sets, electronic ambulatory pump dedicated primary IV sets and non-dedicated primary IV sets, which include gravity sets and non-dedicated sets for syringe pumps.
This market includes primary (dedicated and non-dedicated), secondary IV sets, and IV extension sets. Growth of the total market is solely driven by a slight increase in unit sales as the ASP of all device types has been decreasing due to fierce competition and sluggish economic conditions.
