Sinohydro Corporation (Sinohydro) is planning to undertake the construction of a hydroelectric power plant on Nyabarongo II located between Ngororero District in Western Province and Muhanga District in Southern Province, Rwanda.
The project involves the construction of a 17MW hydro power plant. It includes the construction of diversion tunnel, dam, access roads and other related infrastructure facilities, the installation of electrical, mechanical equipment and safety systems, and the laying of power transmission lines.
In April 2015, Rwandan government secured project funding from China.
In May 2015, Rwandan government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Sinohydro to draft a framework that will help fast-track the proposed project.
In February 2017, India and Rwanda seal deal for the development of the project.
The project involves the construction of a 17MW hydro power plant on Nyabarongo River located between Ngororero District in Western Province and Muhanga District in Rwanda.
The US$98 million project includes the following:
