Queensland Coal Pty Ltd (QCPL), Nippon Steel Australia Pty Ltd (NPA), Marubeni Coal Pty Ltd (MCPL) and Sumisho Coal Development Pty Ltd (SCD) are undertaking the development of a coal mine in Elphinstone, Queensland, Australia.
The project involves the development of a coal mine on 20,380ha of land with a production capacity of 10MTPA of thermal and metallurgical coal. It includes the construction, development, and operation of a surface/underground open cut, long wall thermal coal mine, and associated infrastructure.
The project includes the construction of an office space, a gas drainage system, ventilation infrastructure, access roads, water management infrastructure, pipelines, dams, stockpiles and related infrastructure, and the installation of electrical infrastructure, safety and security systems.
The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy has been appointed as a technical consultant, Douglas Partners Pty Ltd as a geo-technical consultant and Resource Strategies Pty Ltd as a planning consultant.
Rio Tinto Coal Australia Pty Ltd (Rio Tinto) will manage and operate the project on behalf of the joint venture partners.
In March 2014, a consideration report was prepared for the project.
In May 2015, a groundwater impact assessment report was prepared.
On October 27, 2015, the Independent Expert Scientific Committee on Coal Seam Gas and Large Coal Mining Development (IESC) was requested by the Australian Government Department of the Environment to provide advice on Rio Tinto’s Hail Creek Coal Mine Extension Transition project.
Rio Tinto is the process of selling the project. However, it will be finalized until Anglo American decides to sell its Australian coking coal mines.
