The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) is planning to construct a hydroelectric power plant in Arunachal Pradesh, India.
The project involves the construction of a 9,750MW hydroelectric power plant. The project will be implemented in two stages named as Upper Siang Stage-I (6,000MW) and Upper Siang Stage-II (3,750MW).
The project will include the construction of a dam, power house, substation, head race tunnel, steel lined pen stocks, surge shafts, tail race tunnels and switch yards, and the installation turbines, generators and transformers.
RusHydro International has been appointed to undertake feasibility study for the Upper Siang Stage-II.
In January 2012, NTPC completed pre-feasibility study works.
On May 28, 2013, the Arunachal Pradesh government signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) with the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO) and National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) for the Upper Siang Stage-II. Under the terms of the agreement the project will be undertaken on build, own, operate and transfer (BOOT) basis with a lease period of 40 years.
In January 2014, the state government gave nod for allotment of the 6,000MW Upper Siang Stage-I project to the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) and the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) through a joint venture.
In March 2014, RusHydro International AG was appointed as the design consultant and RusHydro International India as the project operator for the Upper Siang Stage-II.
In December 2015, NTPC is in the process of obtaining planning approval to develop a single multi-purpose storage plant on Siang River instead of two stage hydro-electric projects.
NEEPCO has already signed an agreement for execution of the second stage with the government.
In August 2016, pre-feasibility study activities are underway.
