National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) is planning to undertake the Talcher Coal Based Thermal Power Plant Expansion project in Angul district, Odisha, India.
The project involves the expansion of the existing power plant by 1,320MW.
The project includes the construction of new coal washing unit, water transmission pipeline, raw water storage tanks, switchyard for power evacuation, and powerhouse, the installation of turbines and generators and the laying of transmission lines.
The project is planned to be developed under two phases with the construction of 660MW power units in each phase.
The project will adopt an advanced super critical technology that would reduce carbon dioxide emission besides burning less fuel with higher output.
In Fourth Quarter of 2010, a public hearing for expansion of the plant was held, but later it was cancelled on expiry of two years.
On April 29, 2017, Government of Odisha approved the project.
Planning activities are underway.
