National Airports Corporation Ltd (NACL) is planning to undertake the construction of an international airport in Zambia.
The project involves the construction of an international airport with the capacity to accommodate one million passengers per annum.
The project includes the construction of a 50-room hotel, a business complex, an apron, taxiway, runway, rescue and fire station, water reticulation and power systems, parks, landside and airside driveways, 28m air traffic control tower, air cargo terminal, aircraft maintenance hangar, airport fuel farm and related infrastructure, and the installation of signaling and security systems
In 2012, the Zambia Forest and Forest Industries Corporation (ZAFFICO) allocated 2,000ha of land for the project.
On May 10, 2013, Parliamentary Committee on Transport and Communications approved the land for the proposed project and NACL also received proposed design plans from shortlisted architectural firms.
In 2014, the project received a parliamentary approval for the implementation.
In August 2015, AVIC International was appointed to design and construct and also to carry out feasibility studies for the project.
In December 2015, the feasibility study for the project commenced.
As of September 2016, the demographic survey works completed.
In March 2017, Initial construction works were commenced.
On June 25, 2017, main construction works were commenced.
Construction works are underway and the project is scheduled to be completed by 2020.
