The Ministry of Transport, Ethiopia (MoT) is planning to build an international airport in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The project will be implemented through Ethiopian Airport Enterprise (EAE).
The project involves the construction of a new international airport with a capacity of 80 million passengers annually and will be implemented in multiple phases.
The project includes the construction of terminals, four runways, a traffic control operations building, a cargo building, restaurants, hotels, shopping malls, office buildings, apartments, an administrative building, and parking and related infrastructure facilities, and the installation of safety and security systems.
ADPI has been appointed as planning and study consultant, and PGI Intelligence as lead consultant for the project.
ADPI has selected eight locations as the possible construction site. After conducting a thorough detailed technical study and analysis, it considered three sites for the development, which are: Abusera locality near Akaki town; Alem Tena, near Modjo town; and Tefki, a small town on Jimma road. All the three sites are located between 60 and 100km from the capital city, Addis Ababa.
In 2016, ADPI concluded its feasibility study and submitted its final report to EAE. EAE and the MoT submitted their proposal to the Council of Ministers for final approval.
The project is currently in the planning phase and is awaiting final approvals. Subject to final go-ahead, the airport is expected to take eight years to complete.
As of September 2017, construction is expected to commence in 2020.
The final location is yet to be selected in the third quarter of 2018.
