The Ministry of Power and Water Resource (MPWR) is planning to construct a hydroelectric dam and power plant on the Sanaga River in the Littoral Region, Cameroon.
The project involves the construction of a 270MW hydroelectric power plant with concrete dam and dikes on both sides. It includes the construction of a powerhouse, a tank with a capacity of 179 million m3, a substation, the installation of six 45MW turbines, generators and transformers, and the laying of two 225kV 75km long transmission lines.
On April 2, 2013, MPWR signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Hydropower Engineering Consulting Group International, Inc. (HYDROCHINA), part of China Electric Power Construction Group Co., Ltd., to undertake a feasibility study.
The funds required for the development of the project are expected to be received from the Export-Import Bank of China.
In 2014, the Cameroonian government and HYDROCHINA exchanged technico-economic characteristics on the project.
On January 19, 2015, Cameroon government signed a commercial agreement with HYDROCHINA for the project.
A preliminary feasibility study has been completed in late 2015 and MPWR started the process of preparing the detailed engineering and financial estimation for the project.
Bank of China is providing funding for the project.
MPWR is in the process of selecting technical consultants for the project.
