Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Water and Electricity (MOWE), through King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy (KA-CARE), is planning to build two nuclear power reactors in Saudi Arabia.
The project involves the construction of a nuclear power plant comprising two nuclear reactors. It will include the construction of a powerhouse, a substation and related infrastructure and the installation of nuclear reactors, reactor coolant pumps, steam generators, transformers and safety and security systems and the laying of transmission lines.
Each nuclear reactor will be a SMART (System-integrated Modular Advanced Reactor), 330 MWt pressurised water reactor with integral steam generators and advanced safety features, designed by the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. The unit is designed for electricity generation up to 100 MWe.
On March 3, 2015, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy (KA-CARE) and Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI).
On September 3, 2015, a new contract was signed between KA-CARE and KAERI which includes cooperation and joint construction in designing the core of a SMART reactor.
Feasibility study is underway and will be complete by 2018. Simultaneously, engineering design works are underway.
20% of engineering design works were completed by December 2016.
The project involves the construction of two nuclear power reactors, each with a power generation capacity of 100MW, in Saudi Arabia.
