The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) plans to build a coal-fired power plant in Thepha, Songkhla, Thailand.
The project includes the construction of a 2,200MW coal-fired power plant, comprises two units of 1,100MW, on 473ha of land. It includes the construction of a powerhouse, a substation, storage facilities and related infrastructure, the installation of transformers and generators, and the laying of transmission lines.
Consultants of Technology Co. Ltd (COT), an engineering consultant of Thailand, has been appointed as study consultant.
In November 2014, EGAT and COT conducted first public hearing held on the project and the second review held in February 2015.
On July 28, 2015, EGAT conducted the third public review session on the project plans.
In August 2015, EGAT has submitted an environmental and health impact assessment (EHIA) to the National Environment Board (NEB).
In August 2016, the EHIA report was rejected by the Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning Office (ONEP).
The project is facing delay due to the opposition from local residents over the land acquisition and environmental issues.
The project is further delayed to 2022.
