AES Distributed Energy, Inc. (AES DE) a subsidiary of the AES Corporation, is planning to build a renewable peaker plant on Kauai’s south shore, Hawaii, the US.
The project involves the construction of a 28MW solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant and 20MW five-hour duration energy storage system. It includes the construction of a substation, access roads, storage tanks, and the installation of solar panels, and the Laying of transmission lines.
On January 10, 2017, Kauai's Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC) announced a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with AES DE.
In-house division of AES will construct the project.
In July 2017, The Hawaii Public Utilities Commission has approved the construction of the project.
Pre-design activities are underway. Construction is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2018.
