Global Airborne ISR Market - Segmented by Purpose (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance), Submarkets (Maritime Patrol, Airborne Ground Surveillance, Airborne Early Warning, and Signals Intelligence) Geography - Market forecast and Analysis (2018-2023)

The Airborne ISR is an important part of aviation and is responsible for providing additional situational awareness of the surroundings to the pilots inside a cockpit. This has become essential as the ISR plays a vital role performing critical operations with accurate intelligence and surveillance. The global market for Airborne ISR is expected to register compound annual growth rate of 4.13% in the forecast period of 2015 - 2020.

The ongoing airborne ISR programs have been severely affected by budget cuts and sequestration, in advanced countries such as US and Europe, since 2011. This had a negative impact on the production and procurement of spare parts and accessories for ISR systems and platforms. Major programs such as fighter aircraft, land vehicles, and naval projects were put on hold, and most of them were cancelled, which resulted in an overall decline of industry margins and profitability. It also led to a significant reduction in the number of military planes. There was a considerable decline in the processing of ISR systems as well, to compensate for the reduction in the number of planes. Complexity of data sets and issues with maritime surveillance radar are some major challenges faced by the market.

The integration of broadband and internet services with the military aircraft is the latest trend that provides the deployed soldiers or the UAS with data extraction, mission planning, gathering of last-minute intelligence and communications en route. The broadband and antenna services are protected by multi-layer of security codes that forbids hacking of the system.

The procurement of 5th generation aircraft by United States and its allied nations will strengthen the ISR market in the forecast period. North American region will lead the market for ISR systems due to ongoing developments and funding on ISR activities on several military platforms. Increase in the imminent demand for ISR systems and growing customer funding is also a key market driver in Asia Pacific.

The key players in the Airborne ISR technology are Lockheed Martin, L-3 Communications, BAE Systems, Northrop Grumman and UTC Aerospace systems. L-3 Communications acquired ForceX in late 2015. ForceX pioneers in providing ISR and situational awareness systems. This move has placed L3 as the contender for major provider of military real time intelligence. Lockheed Martin’s Dragon Family of ISR is an integrated system that meets the need for single platform intelligence with 6 airborne and ground system capable of ISR requirements and is available to customers with full customisation. This integrated system has remained in demand since 2011 and has been delivering results and products continuously to USA, Finland, Republic of Korea and Italy.
