This IDC study investigates the role of industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), 5G, fiber optics, cloud, and artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) technologies in the evolution of the train station of the future. The increasing pace of urbanization across both emerging and developed markets will continue to put stress on transportation infrastructure. At the same time denser urban areas will provide the opportunity for improving the efficiency of rail transport. Communications and IT technologies such as 5G, fiber optics, AI/ML, and cloud will play a central role to the future enhancements and addition of new functionality in the train station of the future.
