This IDC Energy Insights Perspective discusses the May 2016 EnerNOC announcement that it will be selling off its utility customer engagement software business. The news was a little surprising seeing that EnerNOC's acquisition of the company Pulse was only in 2014. In fact, at the last analyst day for EnerNOC, building a separate and sustainable software business group was one of the headlines. What is not surprising is that there are challenges in selling software to utilities in general — and there are specific and larger challenges in selling utility customer engagement software in the United States. Those challenges are obviously what is leading EnerNOC to exit that part of the business.
