IDC Perspective: Asia/Pacific Intelligent Transport Initiatives 2018

IDC Perspective: Asia/Pacific Intelligent Transport Initiatives 2018Transport services are undergoing a digital revolution with increased monitoring through remote and embedded sensors together with the replacement of paper-based systems with cyber-physical systems. These intelligent transport systems (ITS) automate the access control, payment transactions, and data collection on location/timing and connected infrastructure to improve service, safety, and reduce energy consumption/pollution, to highlight just a few benefits. The Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) region is undergoing the fastest growth in highways and public infrastructures. ITS are becoming a key part of this transport development in the region of applicability for this IDC Perspectives report."Intelligent transport systems are being developed in the most advanced urban centers across the Asia/Pacific. The developments use widely different technologies for payments, ticketing, and advanced vehicle connectivity, " says Gerald Wang, head of public sector, IDC Health and Government Insights. "Outside of China, there has been little attempt to join up these developments and there are no widely adopted standards such as the Smart Ticketing Alliance formed in 2013. Without joined-up thinking and standards, Asia/Pacific ITS developments will tend to remain localized. Transport systems must become fully integrated across modes and regions to maximize the benefits."There is an opportunity for Asia/Pacific transport authorities to take the lead in driving standardization. Developments that include open specifications that enable integration and an effective ecosystem are the most likely to bring the most long-term benefits.Regional development focuses on transport development as an enabler for improved productivity by efficiently bringing people into high density urban spaces in which increased density of agglomeration correlates positively with economic growth. A well-run transport system benefits the economy and attracts the top talent to work in a region.
