Agribusiness in Australia
Australia's Agribusiness sector – from primary producers, to processors, manufacturers and wholesalers – plays an important role in domestic and global food supply chains. This goes in both directions, with interconnected supply chains blurring the line between domestic and international conditions. Agricultural industries are heavily exposed to global commodity prices, while seasonal weather conditions ensure volatile year-to-year production volumes. Drought conditions hit the sector hard leading up to 2019-20. Although rainfall has picked up in recent years, farmers battled heavy flooding in 2022 as La Nina saturated agricultural hotspots in New South Wales and Queensland. Over the long-term, water scarcity is shaping up as a key issue for farmers and innovative approaches will be needed to maximise existing resources.
The Agribusiness sector includes businesses that are directly engaged in, or directly benefit from, agricultural activities. All businesses in this sector produce agricultural commodities, are primary processors of agricultural produce, or supply goods and services to farms.
