Asia and Oceania plays an important role in the global oil storage industry. It accounts for more than 44% of the total global oil storage capacity in 2017. Several countries in this region are developing new storage terminals to cater to their domestic demands. The largest active oil storage terminals of Asia and Oceania are Sungaipakning (Indonesia), Yeosu II (South Korea), Geoje (South Korea), Kiire (Japan) and Ulsan VIII (South Korea). Asia and Oceania is expected to have a total planned oil storage capacity of over 33,500 mcm in 2022, and will account for around 49% of global planned oil storage capacity.

Oil storage capacity increased from over 550,000 mcm in 2012 to more than 600,000 mcm in 2017 at an AAGR of around 1.6%. It is expected to increase to around 635,000 mcm in 2022 at an AAGR of 1.1%. Indonesia, China, Japan, South Korea and India are the leading oil storage countries in Asia and Oceania. In 2017, these countries account for more than 93% of the total oil storage capacity of the region.

The report provides -

  • Information on storage terminals that store crude oil, petroleum products and chemicals (that come out from an oil refinery). Terminals that store only liquid products such as bio-diesel, vegetable oil, molasses, other inorganic chemicals, etc., are not included.
  • Standalone LPG storage terminals are also not included in the report.
  • Information on storage terminals are sourced from company websites, annual reports, news and press releases, presentations, other company reports and accounts; ministry/regulatory sources and from a few third party news sources (based on the information availability prior to the publication of the report).
  • Storage terminals, for which basic information such as terminal name, location (state or province within a country), start year or, design storage capacity are not available from the company or, ministry/regulatory sources, have not been included in the report.
  • All the capacities given in this report are annual capacities as on 31st December of every year.
  • Capacity of a storage terminal is the total design capacity of the terminal.
