Frost Radar™: Automated Border Control eGates, 2022
The COVID-19 pandemic had a catastrophic impact on airports in 2020, resulting in a 50% reduction in capacity, a 60% drop in passenger numbers, and a total revenue loss of more than $125 billion. The pandemic has also shifted airport investment priorities. Rather than investing in physical infrastructure, airport owners are now focusing on improving their digital infrastructure. As a result, airports all over the world are implementing contactless technologies to restore passenger confidence in air travel.
Automated border control systems (ABC) or eGates are automated self-service barriers that use data stored in a chip in biometric passports along with a photo or fingerprint taken at the time of entering the eGate to verify the passport holder's identity. ABC gates allow for an automated border passage by authenticating an electronic machine-readable travel document (e-MRTD) or passport, establishing that the passenger is the rightful holder of the document, querying border control records, and automatically determining eligibility for border crossing.
