Hong Kong Freight Transport Report Q4 2015
BMI View: The outlook for Hong Kong's freight transport sector is one of modest growth and caution. Weforecast positive growth across modes in 2015, but highlight that the ongoing slowdown in the Chineseeconomy does not bode well for the city-state that is heavily reliant on trade with its giant neighbour. Withdemand for goods set to be affected over the medium term, and combined with the already highly developednature of Hong Kong's freight network, we expect growth to be minimal over the medium term.
Hong Kong's relatively small size of 1,104sq km population of 7.3mn belies the massive role it plays in theglobal supply chain. Hong Kong's port and airport have developed into key Asian transhipment points; theairport is the largest in the world in terms of cargo handled, while its port is the fourth-largest containerfacility. As a result of this global transhipment role, Hong Kong's freight transport volumes - for air freightespecially - are hugely informed by the global macroeconomic outlook.
