Abstract

Introduction
The report contains a chronological summary of genetically modified (GM) plantations with an analytical snapshot of GM crops and their traits across the globe. It provides statistics of major crops that have undergone genetic modification; global production; domestic production (state-wise); major producers; uses; cultivation problems; transgenic varieties-traits, approval, analysis of adoption and overview of international biosafety regulations.

Key findings and Highlights
  • Out of a total twenty one countries, India has registered 160per cent growth in the acreage under GM plantation, reaching 1.3 million hectare from 0.5 million hectare in 2005, followed by Brazil and Australia almost doubling their area.
  • India entered the GM club in 2002 with a modest acreage of 40,000 hectares. In 2004 the acreage grew ten times - industry sources compute the total acreage at 5 lakh hectares with a single cotton crop approved. In 2005 the acerage increased to 1.3 million hectares.
Reasons to buy
  • Presents Indian scenario in a separate section, where the history of genetic proliferation in Indian agriculture and statewise approach to Bt cotton are discussed.
  • The report lays special emphasis on crops in the pipeline with their approval status, regulations, role of government, etc.
  • Reveals comparison of India with other countries on various metrics.
