Regenerative Medicine

1594

Regenerative medicine is an evolving interdisciplinary field of medicine focused on the repair, replacement or regeneration of cells, tissues or organs to restore impaired function resulting from any cause, including disease, trauma, congenital defects and aging. This field holds the promise of using the body’s natural healing process to regenerate damaged tissues and organs, previously irreparable.
Regenerative medicine also allows scientists to use stem cells and nanotechnology to grow tissues and organs in the lab in vitro and implant them into the body.

As the demand for patients requiring organ transplantation is greater than the organs available for donation, regenerative medicine has the potential to solve the problem of organ shortage and save lives. Since the organ’s cells will match those of the patient, organ rejection is not a problem with regenerative medicine. The aim of regenerative medicine is to one day be capable of supporting the body in such a way that there will be no need for organ replacement.

Advances in stem cell science and tissue-engineered scaffolds enable regenerative medicine to be used to repair damaged tissue or organs damaged by aging and disease. Many scientists believe that stem cell treatments have the potential to alleviate suffering and change the face of human disease.
