Synopsis

Abstract

This IDC study presents IDC's first mobile softswitch and mobile media gateway (MGW) network equipment capex forecast for Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) or APEJ covering the years 2007?2011. Key features include forecasts for APEJ markets, namely, Australia, India, the Philippines, the People's Republic of China (PRC), South Korea, Taiwan, and the rest of APEJ (Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam). Fourteen carriers' activities in mobile softswitching/MGWs are analyzed ? Telstra, Bharti Televentures, BSNL, IDEA Cellular, PCCW Mobile, Globe Telecom, Smart, Sun Cellular, China Mobile, China Unicom, LGT, KTF, SKT, and Chungwha Telecom.

"The continued robust growth of mobile subscriptions in the APEJ region is driving mobile carriers to accelerate migration to softswitch architecture in order to reduce capex, opex, and to prepare for future IMS-based multimedia services such as instant messaging (IM) and video services," says Bill Rojas, Director of Telecom Research Services, IDC Asia/Pacific.
